History of Air University Library

Through the Years: 2000's - Present Day

2000

Following a 26-year tenure, Robert B. Lane retired as Library Director in 2000, having assumed the position in 1974. Throughout his leadership, he facilitated the integration of computer systems to optimize library services and orchestrated significant renovations and expansions, ultimately enhancing both the facility's space and its array of services.

2014

The Library opened a new portion of the building after undergoing an extensive $11 million renovation, which included the construction of a two-story, 17,000 square foot addition featuring new study rooms, administrative offices, and a dedicated Special Collections room.

2019

The library formed a new Archives department and integrated it into the Special Collections.

2020

The library expanded its online services and introduced curbside assistance to ensure continued access to library services during the pandemic.

2024

Air University and School of Advanced Air and Space Studies paid tribute to Stephen Chiabotti by renaming and reopening its library auditorium in his honor, underscoring his significant contributions as both a distinguished officer and educator, while also highlighting the room's upgraded audiovisual features during the ceremony.
