According to the DoD Quarterly Suicide Report CY2023 Q1 figures, the number of Active Component suicide deaths increased by 19 compared to Q1 CY 2022 (94 versus 75 suicide deaths). Overall the numbers continue to creep up despite the programs and services aimed at prevention, suggesting more research and study of suicide is needed. "Effective suicide prevention also entails educating individuals about healthy/adaptive coping strategies, building confidence, and instilling a belief that members are indeed resilient and able to effectively overcome future life problems" (AFI 90-505, p. 5, para 1.3.2). This guide provides information about suicide, prevention, and resilience programs for the active duty and retired veterans.
This research guide is not a comprehensive listing of sources, but is intended to be a starting point from which students can begin their research according to their specific needs.
