Maxwell and the Civil Rights Movement

June 2020

Noel F. Parrish was the white commander of the Tuskegee Airmen who argued the need to desegregate the Air Force and for better treatment of Black Airmen. According to the oral history interview of Brig Gen Harry C. Aderholt, who was the commander of the 4th Squadron at Maxwell, Col Parrish wrote a pivotal paper on segregation in the Air Force and said this about that document:

"About that time Noel Parrish [Brig Gen] had written a document in the Air University on Black folks and how we should integrate. The Air Force was really integrated on Noel Parrish's document; I've forgotten the name of it."

This document is part of Air University Library's student papers collection, and it is presented here in its original form. It may contain outdated cultural depictions, terminology, or ideas. This is a pivotal document that led the way to the integration of the Air Force and is included in this LibGuide for its historical significance.
